The local school board finally voted on this issue, and decided that condoms should be made available in the high school. There are some restrictions, which is to be expected. The condoms will be distributed in a privately run clinic which is located in the high school. Minors will require a parent’s permission to sign up with the clinic (which I believe has been true all along). Once signed up, however, they will not need permission to get the condoms.
There was, of course, significant opposition from those who said we should raise our expectations of student behavior, not lower them. To me that’s like saying that we shouldn’t buy cars because we should all ride unicorns. Every year there are around 50 pregnancies among the students.
In any case, it’s settled.
