Give me a break. In fact, give Romney a break.
Was this remark poorly phrased? I suppose. Does it deserve a little good-natured teasing? Yes, but — Romney deserves a lot of praise for having deliberately reached outside the old boys’ network when staffing his cabinet.
I’m not saying it makes him a hero, but he displayed a degree of openness that a lot of other politicians have not.
As has happened before (most notably with George H. W. Bush), it’s not the candidate himself that makes my gorge rise: it’s the people sharing the dais with him that do.

If Romney had reached outside he probably would be praised. But he didn’t. He was approached by an outside group which stuck both candidates for governor to a promise of hiring more women. Further, while Romeny may have started his term with a strong list of female staffers, he ended his term with very few. Finally, the real issue with his comments about women where what they reveal about his thinking on one half of the population.
He feels that women need special treatment in order to “get home to make dinner for their kids.” That sentece doesn’t make any kind of sense in the 21st century wherein both parents can share duties and both genders can stay late at the office to run a state.
You’re right, he was approached by an outside group.
